Called the City of Sails, Auckland is the North Island’s (and New Zealand’s) largest city. Situated on two harbours, the city is a diverse metropolis that is usually the first stop for international visitors to the country. The city’s iconic Sky Tower dominates the skyline, and the city’s oldest park, Auckland Domain, is found on an extinct volcano. Yachts line its harbours, and the city offers a variety of recreational activities for residents and visitors alike.

With an urban population of close to 1.5 million people, Auckland is a cosmopolitan city with diverse inhabitants. In fact, Auckland has the world’s fourth largest proportion of foreign born residents (behind Dubai, Toronto and Brussels). It has a large Asian community, a vibrant Maori culture, and has the largest Polynesian population in the world (Pasifika New Zealanders).

The city is regularly ranked as one of the most liveable in the world. In fact, it took first place in the 2021 Global Liveability Ranking by The Economist magazine.

For visitors, Auckland is a perfect start to their exploration of the North Island. Numerous world-class restaurants, bars and shops can be found throughout the city. Museums, festivals, sports and a thriving music scene mean that there is something for everyone in Auckland.

The Auckland Zoo, the Sky Tower, the War Museum and Mount Eden (an extinct volcano that is now a park) are among the many attractions the city has to offer.

Waiheke Island

Just a forty minute ferry trip from Auckland’s downtown is Waiheke Island. It is the second-largest island the Hauraki Gulf, and is site of beaches, vineyards and olive groves. It is the perfect spot for visitors to get away from the hustle and bustle of Auckland to spend a day of relaxation.
